Droid delays and flight suit ETA…

While I am QUITE pleased with how things have taken a turn, I unfortunately do have to postpone my initial droid part purchases by about a month or so.  This works out because the frame and leg sets I’ve decided to go with after extensive discussion, research, and bank account checking… won’t be ready for sale until next month anyway.  As I said, I’m not bummed too much about this because in lieu of having legs and frames to assemble this month, me and the wife have come across a good deal on something that we have both wanted for far longer than a pair of droids… a vintage tiny travel trailer!  If you’re at all interested in that kind of thing, please feel free to click over to our other blog for that, on www.HomeSweetRoam.com!

As for the TI/IC flight suit overalls that we’re having modified, we’re still waiting.  We have word from the tailor doing the work, and are being patient with no worries about it.  We understand things take time.  When you send off a set of overalls to be changed, it might take a few weeks.  When you send 3 sets, well… it might take 3 times as long, and thats okay with us!  More when we have have more to post!

Accute case of the droids!

So the wife has been very very understanding about me wanting to finally embrace my long dormant inner StarWars nerd.  She is supporting my crazy idea to become one of the many thousands of grown men walking around in costume pretending to be from outer space.  I simply have an awesome wife, but that’s besides the point here.  What really adds a bonus is that she’s also on board to let me, at the same time, build my own Astromech droid.  There’s only one catch, and that is that we have to also build one for her as well.  I have won the wife lottery.  I swear.

While I have not decided on much of the details about my droid, despite having thousands of ideas of course… she has already settled on a series-model designation, name, coloring scheme, and many other things!  We’ll use this blog to document the build of both droids.  However, I have gotten her droid it’s own website already, which will most likely be a photo gallery used after completion, when we’re going out to events.

As of now, the only thing decided on my droid, which will be the same as hers, is that the first dome (head) that will be made for it will be for an R5 series.  These are the droids with the flat, more cylindrical heads as opposed to the domes that the R2’s use.  You might remember the most well known (respectively speaking) of this series, R5-D4, who blew a motivator when he was about to be bought by Luke and Owen Skywalker.  This chance happening of course, kept R2-D2 and C-3PO together, and continued the long friendship, and arguable one of the biggest parts of the saga!

For now, we’re doing alot of reading and meeting the guys who have done this before and have their own R2’s, R5’s, R4’s, and many many others.  I’ll list a few links below so anyone who finds this (probably by total accident) can also get a jumping off point if they ever want to try and be a part of this insane droid building world!

Well, back to the homework.  We should have some photos up as we officially start, of new tools, parts, and probably quite a few “what the hell have we started?” moments.

Flight suit

So I’m starting this blog after the fact when it comes to the TI costume I’ve begun.  I’ll have to go back a few weeks to thanksgiving 2009 when I ordered 4 coveralls from Red-Kap.  I’ll post the link to the C10 model below that I got.  I ordered 3 (Wife, son, myself) as we all wanted to start this together, and a spare suit as raw material.  All of the suits arrived in early December and after the holidays I repackaged them after test fittings, along with 6 Imperial cog patches from VaderDave, and them to the Jolly Roger Squadron detachment tailor in Chicago.  The tailor, Aly, is going to use the spare suit and create all of the pockets and do all the modifications necessary for the 3 main suits.  As of this posting, they’re in her hands and she is working on them.  I’ll make sure my next post about them (hopefully when they arrive back here!) includes photos.
